Thousands of Palestinian students go on strike in protest of Israeli efforts to impose censored Palestinian textbooks.

Occupied East Jerusalem– Palestinian colleges in occupied East Jerusalem are observing a basic strike in protest at attempts by Israel’s Jerusalem town to censor and also modify Palestinian textbooks, as well as present an Israeli curriculum in class.

Hundreds of schools shut their doors on Monday early morning-

– the latest in a series of current actions over the past couple of weeks led by moms and dads that included objections and also a refusal to educate the Israeli-imposed textbooks.
In a joint press release on Sunday, the merged parents board and also the Palestinian National as well as Islamic Forces in Jerusalem asked for a complete strike and required worldwide organisations to step in to secure Palestinian education.

Reporters and residents shared lots of pictures of vacant classrooms and closed schools on Monday morning.

Ziad al-Shamali, aged 56, head of the parents’ board union, informed Al Jazeera that if Israel’s initiatives prosper, it “will have control over the education and learning of 90 percent of our students in Jerusalem.”

According to al-Shamali, there are more than 280 Palestinian schools in Jerusalem, with some 115,000 students from preschool to grade 12, according to al-Shamali. He claimed that 90-95 percent of colleges had joined the strike.
Al-Shamali claimed that Israel had been attempting to impose a “distorted variation of the Palestinian Authority (PA) educational program” on private Palestinian colleges since the beginning of the year.

” They are doing this under the pretext that they give independent schools licenses, which means they give them money,” stated al-Shamali, who resides in the area of al-Tur in busy East Jerusalem.

The existing municipality-run institutions for Palestinians in the city have currently started to instruct the modified version of the curriculum, he continued, while brand-new institutions being constructed by the community are being compelled to instruct the Israeli curriculum.

” What is fretting the moms and dads is that they are being caught in between distorted Palestinian curriculums and also Israeli educational programs,” claimed al-Shamali.
” There is an Israelisation of Palestinian education taking place,” he continued, which had actually existed for the past 10 to 12 years yet had actually intensified over the last 3 years.

” Currently, they are adding their very own content like ‘Yossi is Mohammad’s neighbor’, concerning negotiations and co-existence,” stated al-Shamali. “They have actually had fun with textbooks for Arabic, religion, and background, as well as any kind of nationwide references.”

On Sunday night, videos were shared on social networks of homeowners hanging up posters checking out “general strike”—yes to the Palestinian educational program, no to the distorted curriculum”.
In July, Israeli authorities revoked the irreversible licences of six Palestinian schools in Jerusalem, claiming that their books incited against the Israeli state and army. They were allowed to operate for a year if the curriculum was modified.

In 1967, Israel militarily occupied and unlawfully linked the eastern half of Jerusalem. Some 350,000 Palestinians presently stay in occupied East Jerusalem, with 220,000 Israelis living in prohibited negotiations amongst them.

Today, 86 percent of occupied East Jerusalem is under the direct control of the Israeli federal government and its inhabitants.
The annexation of East Jerusalem is not recognised by any nation in the world, apart from the United States, as it breaches global legislation that outlines that an occupying power does not have sovereignty in the territory it occupies.

In 2009, the Jerusalem community embraced a master plan meant “to lead and also detail the city’s advancement in the next decades.” The vision, as specified in the plan, is to develop a Jewish demographic majority, with Israeli Jews comprising 70 percent of the city, as well as Palestinians just comprising 30 percent.

This was later modified to a 60:40 ratio.

Al-Shamali said the moms and dads board was intending to continue to object or raise its actions if its needs were not satisfied or if Israeli authorities started to forcefully impose the modified books.

” It’s most likely that we will proceed with the strike and also intensify it,” he stated. “We will additionally continue with our protests before the institutions, as well as we will certainly contact worldwide institutions to step in.”
